The project "Research on conflict resolution and development of management measures for the protection of gray seals in the German Baltic Sea" ("MaRo") is intended to contribute to sustainable coexistence between humans and gray seals.
Gray seals were considered to be extinct in the southern Baltic Sea until the early 2000s. Gradually they return to their historical areas of distribution. They are still in a sensitive settlement phase in the coastal waters of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as shown by the results of the previous project "Gray seals in the German Baltic Sea".
The research project will focus on the population development, the nutrition biologist and interactions with the fishery. The results serve as a scientific basis for a sustainable management of the particularly protected species gray seal in the Baltic Sea. |
