Type of Entry: Project
Website: www.nioz.nl/loicz
Duration: 1998 - 2002
Description:

Liaison with Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) Programme Project elements:

- Assessing economic and social impacts of global change in coastal systems

- Offering of knowledge from LOICZ to Integrated Coastal Zone Management activities

- Organising regional workshops on LOICZ/CZMC issues

LOICZ is a Core Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). IGBP’s goal is to describe and study the interactive physical and biological processes that regulate the Earth system, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring and how they are influenced by human actions. IGBP has established an integrated, multi-disciplinary research programme consisting of eight Core projects, like LOICZ, studying aspects of the Earth system, as well as three Framework Activities that address data management, modelling and capacity building.

LOICZ research issues are grouped into four Focuses:

1: The effects of changes in external forcing or boundary conditions on coastal fluxes

2: Coastal Biogeomorphology and global change

3: Carbon fluxes and trace gas emissions

4: Economic and social impacts of global change in coastal systems.

The Netherlands is contributing to the LOICZ programme by implementing a national LOICZ programme, financing the International Project Office on Texel (NIOZ) and by contributing to international projects directed towards the goals of LOICZ. A liaison officer secures Exchange of information and collaboration between LOICZ and the Coastal Zone Management Centre. Special attention is being given to the interaction between natural and socio/economic science and its application in the field of Integrated Coastal Zone Management.
