The EC- project OROMA is dealing with the coastal morphodynamic and coastal management especially in such field as dredging, beach nourishment, jetty construction or other coastal protection measures. To optimise these actions it does not need data, it needs most actual thematic information to assess the status and possible risks within the environment of the coastal zone. This is also necessary for the security in shipping, to minimise the risk of accidents, and for the detection of oil pollution that affects the natural and recreational value in a negative way and endangers the use of coastal waters as food supply area Therefore OROMA project has the objective to present the necessary information on the most actual status of the coastal bathymetry and related processes as erosion, sediment transport and deposition. OROMA will continue to develop innovative tools for mapping and presenting morphodynamics and related processes on large areas in nearly real time. The OROMA team consisting of 6 developers and 4 end users (coastal management) will follow the issue to convert scientific based knowledge into the most actual thematic information to be distributed via electronic network. Scientific objectives and approach in OROMA project OROMA project will conduct experimental monitoring to increase the effectiveness of monitoring technologies by increasing the basic knowledge on the physics involved. During the experimental monitoring phase of two years observation, data from radar-, optical- and in-situ instruments will be acquired and validated. Data will be acquired from board satellites and airplanes as well as from mobile ground based instruments. Raw data from the different sources will be combined and mapped into one common grid. Radar deduced information on the bathymetry will be mapped in parallel to the optical acquisition of concentration of suspended matter. Algorithms for data fusion, assimilation and inverse modelling will be adapted for the assessment of the overall coastal status. Results will be verified by ground truth observations. An operational technique to detect trends and possible risks within the monitored processes will be developed. Thematic information on the status and the interacting processes will be exchanged among the experts. Extracted information, which is of value for the management, will be comprised to thematic maps. Expected impacts of OROMA project OROMA project will develop operational mapping tools by scientific progress. It will integrate cost effective radar and optical mapping techniques for the bathymetric assessment. High resolution hydrodynamic surface features will be observed by ground based radar and integrated in the mapping. OROMA will achieve a near real time presentation of all monitored parameter. The results will be presented as thematic information into a geo- coded grid and distributed by electronic network to ensure actual update and to make it quick accessible for the management. OROMA integrates end users, representing the coastal management, by providing them the flow of information on electronic networks. It will be their qualification, which evaluates the success of the project and the operational usability of its product |
